Healthy kidneys - long life!
13 March13 of March, 2014 all over the world is celebrated the World Kidney Day - an annual event, which is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrologists and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations. In the current year this day is held under the motto «Chronic kidney disease (CKD): age aspects».
The company «VIVA PHARM» organized an educational seminar for doctors -nephrologists, where entered leading experts: Kanatbaeva Asiya Bakishevna, MD, professor KazNMU, President of Kazakhstan Association of Nephrology; and MD Kabulbaev Kairat Abdullaevich.
Asiya Bakishevna shared the report «CKD and aging». Increased life expectancy is accompanied by growth of CKD, as well as the number of patients on dialysis. CKD is a significant factor, which greatly increases the risk of adverse outcomes in patients with arterial hypertension, heart diseases and stroke, diabetes, each of which, in its turn is a major cause of death and disability.
In this regard, Professor Kanatbaeva noted the need to assess renal function, while examining all elderly patients, as well as concluded that the preferred treatment of choice for elderly patients with end-stage of CKD is dialysis.
Kabulbaev Kairat Abdullaevich presented to his colleagues information on the treatment algorithm of mineral bone disorders in CKD, which include hyperphosphatemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism, and described the effect of drugs-calcimimetics on parathyroid glands on the example of cinacalcet (Mimpara drug, Amgen).
Therapy with cinacalcet:
- reduces the synthesis and secretion of parathyroid hormone and cell proliferation of parathyroid glands;
- more effectively reduces the levels of calcium, phosphorus, compared with conventional therapy, as well as achieves the targets of the mineral exchange within 3 months;
- reliably reduces the risk of fractures and the frequency of parathyroidectomy;
- slows the progression of vascular calcification in contrast to therapy with vitamin D drugs;
- provides a significant reduction in the rate of hospitalizations for cardiovascular reasons in dialysis patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism;
- is associated with significantly improved survival.
